This critical edition of Joyce's classic novel presents the 1964 text, corrected by Chester G. Anderson, along with critical essays that read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man from contemporary psychoanalytic, feminist, cultural studies, and postcolonial perspectives. An additional essay demonstrates how several critical perspectives can be combined. As in the first edition, the text and essays are complemented by biographical and critical introductions, bibliographies, and a glossary of critical and theoretical terms. For the second edition, three of the five essays have been revised, and two new ones have been added. Also new is a selection of cultural documents and illustrations.
Joyce's semi-autobiographical chronicle of Stephen Dedalus' passage from university student to "independent" artist is at once a richly detailed, amusing, and moving coming-of-age story, a tour de force of style and technique, and a profound examination of the Irish psyche and society.
