Neusner on Judaism History


The most prolific 20th-century analyst of Rabbinical Judaism, Neusner (Bard College) has reproduced articles from publication over several decades into a three-volume set, covering in turn history, literature, and religion and theology. Here, 19 articles illustrates his view that Rabbinical documents are not mere scrapbooks of random information, but are autonomous and programmed compilations bearing distinguishing traits of rhetoric, topical program, and a logic of coherent discourse; and that all of them form a continuity. He covers theoretical problems, multiple versions of a saying or story, the Mishnah, Leviticus Rabbah, the Talmuds, Rabbinic narratives one by one, and translation and paraphrase. There is no index.
